At the UN Climate Talks (UNFCCC COP18) in Doha in 2012, Costa Rica and El Salvador each commited to restore up to 1 million hectares. The 50 million hectare mark – or one third of the target – drew within reach, amid broad acknowledgement that the largest restoration initiative in history is truly underway. Minister Dr. René Castro-Salazar, Minister for Environment, Energy and Telecommunications from Costa Rica announced the 1 million hectare pledge.
